Disclaimer
I've neen 3 weeks on holiday in Venezuela and I went with tour operator Q-international BV.
2 weeks I stayed at  Isla Margarita
1 week I had a tour in Venezuela

Because it's several years ago I went to Venezuela things can have changed in time.

General information
Venezuela is a poor country in South America. It has a lot of oil, but unforytunately there's a lot of corruption, which makes it a poor country.

In Venezuela there're a lot of rivers. The country is mentioned after the Italian city Venice. This city has a lot of canals and because of all this water it has a certain simulatitu with Venezuela. Because of all the water Venezuela is a furtile and green country with the most beautiful waterfalls of the world.

Language:
In Venezuela people speak Spanish. Only in very touristic locations or expensive hotels people speak English.  The Warao indians have their own language.

Characteristics of the Venezulans:
The people are friendy and relaxed. When you like to see hard working people...then you're in the wrong country. people consider white western people intelligent and rich. When you can travel to Venezuela, you must be rich.

Crime and drugs
There're bad rumours about the police and the prissons.  There's crime in Venezuela and in Caracas a lot of killings take place. There seem to be a lot of junkies in the big cities. In the touristic area's I didn;t notice much crime, but I supose you better not walk alone in the ghetto's of Caracas.

Don't bring drugs and don't use them eather! (A good advice, but especially in Venezuela) When you're present near persons who have drugs, you can get in prisson! Penalties are high and a Venezuelan prisson is not a hotel. The customs really controls your luggage. A customs officer controled my bottle with ice tea and I had to open my suitcase by arrival.

Tips
Wages are low in Venezuela. Tourist usualy give tips when other people notice, or when they can expect something in return. Give the cleaning lady a tip, buy something from a sales man at thebeach. Don't give money to children, better give money to the older people. When your child earns more money then you, because he can begg very wel, would you still sent it to school? Don't give a large tip in the touristic restaurant or the tourist busdriver and guide. These are the rich people in Venezuela. I had a trip of 8 days through Venezuela. The driver got 100 Euro tip. The average month wage is 150 Euro! Most people didn't leave money at their pilow for the cleaning ladies in the hotel. It's just a matter of priorities. I didn't gave the busdriver a big tip.
