Foundation of Scheveningen

Proberbly in the 13th century the fishing town Scheveningen is founded.
My personal theory of the origin of the name Scheveningen is as follows:

The first habitants of this town were my ancestors with the family name von Scheven. These people have lived there for many years, but after a while they had a big fight with some new habitants. Finaly all my ancestors went. (In Dutch: gingen). So the people said: the "von Schevens" went (In Dutch: de von Schevens gingen) They were so happy my ancestors left, they gave the place the name "de von Schevens gingen" In the years that past by, the name "von Schevens gingen" changed into "Schevensgingen"  into "Schevelinge" into "Scheveningen".

I'm still looking for the evidence of this theory......

The fishing town

Scheveningen has always been a fishing town. Even today there's a harbour with fishing boats, but fishing is no longer the main economy. Now Scheveningen is a bathing resort. As a child I have (rarely) seen some old woman in traditional costume but that's now history. Scheveningen has become more and more part of The Hague.

Camping Ockenburgh

This simple community camping near the beach has been sold in 1995. The new name is now changed into "vakantieCentre Kijkduinpark". It now has lots of facilities and it's a 4 starts camping. I've had a lot of holidays at the old camping, which was also popular at Germans. I've learnt my first German words at this place.

The Oranjehotel (The Orange hotel)

The familyname of our Royal Family is "van Oranje-Nassau". ("Oranje" is the Dutch word for the color Orange, so this explains why all our footbal supporters are dressed in orange)
During the second world war this hotel got the nickname "Oranjehotel" because a lot of people of the Dutch resistence were inprissoned here.
