Unfortunately hotel "de Witte Brug" no longer exists.
The building of the Kurhaus hotel is an eye catching building. I remember as I child we went to beach by (a full) bus.
After the bus drove in Scheveningen I saw the high wall of the prison and a few moments later the bus drove at the beautifull plaza
"Gevers Deynoot plein" with the beautifull Kurhaus and the Palace hotel. The Palace hotel is demolished and is now a shopping mall.
They almost also demolished the Kurhaus, but luckely this building was saved and the Kurhaus is now a five starts hotel.
For the website of the Kurhaus (they have a nice virtual tour) click here:
www.kurhaus.nl
Unfortunately the large open Gevers Deynoot Plein is now full with high block of flats. You can now hardly see the Kurhaus.
It's obvious, real estate developpers and the local authorities don't care much about beauty, but they care about money.
Luckely the beaty of the Kurhaus can still be seen from the beach.
In 1901 the Pier in Scheveningen was opened. The name of the Pier was "Wandelhoofd Wilhelmina" and at the end there was a small
pavilion. After a fire this Pier was demolished. In 1961 the new Pier was opened
by his royal highness prins Bernard. The new design was completely different and had two "islands" and a big
tower. Because of the salt water, the concrete of the Pier was in a bad shape and it was sold for a symbolic amount to the
rich restaurant owner "van der Valk" He renovated the Pier and has saved it from demolishion.
At the Scheveningen beach there're often activities. You have the kite festival, the firework and
the traditional new years dive. At the end of 2002 some Dutch politicions were on televison at this event.....it was an election year.
After that year I haven't seen televison pictures of politicions at the diving event anymore.......
