Explanation:

City museum

The city museum is designed by the famous Dutch architect Berlage. The design was in 1935 controversial. In the museum you can see modern art, fashion music instruments and 5 style rooms. There're often special exhabitions at the museum. The website of the museum: www.gemeentemuseum.nl

Palace Noordeinde

Palace Noordeinde is builded in 1533. The Palace is enlarged several times. Since 1984 the Palace Noordeinde is the working office of the queen.
You can make a "virtual tour" through the Palace at the website: Palace tours
The tours are in Quick Time. Further explanation is at the site.

Plein 1813

Plein (Square) 1813 is in the Willemspark. The statue is placed in 1869 as a remeberence for the foundation of the "Vereenigde Nederlanden" (United Netherlands) in 1813. (The Netherlands became independent in 1581, after 80 years of war with Spain, but in a war with the French this indepency ended in 1795. From 1795 - 1813 the Netherlands were occupied by the French.

Peace Palace

The Peace Palace is founded in 1903 by the rich Scottish idealist Andrew Carnegie. The Peace Palace should be an international center for education, welfare and peace. The Peace Palace and the library are still under control of the Carnegie foundation. In the Peace Palace you can find the following organisations:

  • Permanent Court of Arbitraition (1899)
  • International Court of Justice (1945)
  • Hague Academy of International Law (1923)
The American government does not recognise the International Court of Justice. If the International Court would decide to imprisson an American, in theory America could liberate this American that's imprissoned in Holland. (Which would be an act of war against Holland)
I supose some Americans have a good reason for this.......
