The
monastery Santa Catalina
It was not allowed for the sisters to have contact with
persons outside of the monastery. So after they (by force) joined the
monastery, they never saw theire brothers, parents etc. anymore. When you
were a rich nun, you had a poor nun as a housekeeper. But
when I was in the monastery the whole atmosphere was austerity and penance.
I walked through a long passage with all paintings of the Way of the Cross.
They looked very realistic, so it wasn't a gay
atmosphere. I think people were not happy in this monastery.
In the church it are always men who held a holy mess.
(Bishops, priests etc.) But it was absolutely forbidden for the sisters, to
see a man! They solved this problem, by making a special entrance for the
sisters in the church. Through that entrance the sisters came on a balcony
and before the balcony a big and thick curtain was hanging. So the nuns
could here the mess, but they couldn't see anything! Although the monastery
is quit big, I supose it would feel like a prisson for most people.
Centre
In the centre of Arequipa there's a beautiful square, with a
little park in the middle. At the square there're
professional photographers (age
over 50 ,
that make photo's with theire modern camera's (from
the year 1950). They make photo's of children who
have theire first holy communion, family photo's of a special occasion etc.
Market
At the market
there's a lot to see. They sell plastic things we don't even
use at the camping. You also see vegitables, meat, articles for the
household, (self made) clothes and because it was All Saint they also sold a
lot of religious products.
Fire works
When I was in Arequipa it was All
saint. The Peruvians place purple wreaths on graves. At night there's a
gigantic fire work. There were three big bamboe towers with fire work on it.
I doubt if everything was very safe, but it was a spectacular fire work.
Museums
In Arequipa you can visit several
museums and monasterys. AWhen
you see a church or cathedral, go inside to see it's beauty. the Spanish
didn't took all the stolen gold to Spain, they also used
a lot of cold in churches. The churses often are
very impressive. I would definatly advice you
to go the monastery Santa Catalina, because of its special atmosphere.
