Is it hard to do
the Samaria canyon?
The guide in the bus did mentione all kind of diseases:
heart problems, bad knees, people who were to fat etc. These people were
adviced not to walk trhough the canyon. It promissed
to be a difficult walk.
Especially for the Samaria Canyon I
did have bought mountain shoes. I don't advice it. These shoes are
excellent, but not if you're not used to it. After a few miles I had some
blisters, which did make the journey a bit more difficult. But I think when
you've a normal health, this journey would not be a problem. When you've a
bad healt (or are lazy) there's also an alternative which I will mention
later.
Don't forget you walk in the nature, so you can't buy any
drinks or food.
What
can be seen?
The journey starts with a high stairs that leads you to
the valley. The start is the highest part of the journey. The trails are
good and not to small. You walk in the middle of nature, but unfortunaly
there're many people walking. Some people have a tempo, other people walk
slowly. It wasn't easy to make photo's, because other people want to pass
and when I took a photo I wanted to pass these people again, to get by the
group. I think some people are just walking with theire nose to the ground
and are making a race of it. Some other people are walking as if they just
reach the age of 90. In other words: nobody does have the tempo you like.
There's one advantage: although there're many people, you can't get lost,
because there's only one direction you can go.
Half way in the canyon there's a
place to rest. After this place the real canyon starts. It becomes more
narrow and the rocks are getting higher. At the end you sudenly see more and
more people who are walking the wrong way. They don't look very healty, but
do they want to walk back? Well that's not the case: these people didn't
want to walk thwe whole canyon and came by boat. They walk about 1,5 km and
then return to their boat, an ideal solution if you're not very healty or
just are lazy.
