What's the right spelling: Iráklion or Herakleion or something else?
For this capital of Crete I found the following spellings:: Herakleion, Heraklion, Heraklio, Iraklion, Iráklion, Iráklio, Irakleio and even Irakliou. i saw these names in travelling guides, maps and important websites. so to be in short: I don't know for sure what's the right spelling.  Because I saw  Iráklion and also Herakleion on official sites I think these two spellings are both official.

Rocca al Mara
This castle is build by the Venecian (Italy). They made it stronger in 1538 to be able to defend the town against the Turkish. Although it was a good stronghold the Turkish conquered the town. You have a nice view on top of the fortres. In the harbvour you can see fishing boats and yachts.PS: it's not allowed to swim there (near the rats and the big waves)

Gipsy market
Close at the harbour you find the Gipsy market. At these market you see tourists but even more gipsy's, That's why this market is called "Gipsy market". It does look like any other normal marked, but it's big. You also see indeed a lot of Gipsy people. When you like fress things, you have to get up early, otherwise things are sold out. I don't know much about prices, but I think cloths etc were not expensive, because the women were almnost fighting for the clothes.

The city Iráklion
Iráklion is a nice big city with lots of shops. You can see ugly and beautiful buildings. Some streets didn't look very safe to me. I can't remember me a lot of Iráklion and I didn't see much of it, because I wanted to visit the famous Knossos.

Knossos
Close at Iráklion there's  Knossos. More information hierabout Knossos can be found here: photo's Excursion
