Emoticons
Emoticons are emotions shown by icons. Ther're two kind of emoticons: text and pictures. When you see a text emoticon it's important that you turn your head 25% to the left. The strange signs now form a picutre! A wel-known emoticon is the smiley :-)

Pictures emoticons (Smiley's)
You can of-course express emotions by pictures. When I was a child at school, I got a picture as reward for making my exercises good. So the idear of using a picture for expressing a positive feeling is old. For more information about picture-emoticons see the page Start page smiley

Maybe there are some differences in the emoticons used by dutch and those used by other countries.

Abreviations
when you're not familiar with emoticons you can get confiused with specific sms-abreviations. The difference between sms-abreviations and emoticons is that for sms-abreviations you don't have to turn your head for 25% to the left. The abreviations that are not in this dixionairy are used by sms or by chat, because it's quicker to type an abreviation then a whole sentence. In stead of "wait", it's quicker to type "w8" or 4u
(w (w) 8: (eight); (weight, which sounds the same as wait) (4=for, u=you) Most abreviations are from the USA. I myself hardly chat or sms, so I don't know these abreviations. Because of the typing speed, the language used by chat is usually not very good. Many older Dutch people hardly understand what's typed in a chatroom.
